There are many technologies emerging that is radically changing how people perform their day to day tasks, how they do their work, how they shop etc

CPM has reviewed the top technologies in the market in 2018 and narrowed it down to what we believe are the top 4 Technologies to watch out for in 2018

Any business selling products in a business to consumer market should ensure that their customer journey is evolving with technological developments and making the customer journey as fluid and simple as possible.

1. Artificial intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is a branch of computer science that enables machines to imitate intelligent human behaviour. In other words, AI deals with solving problems or carrying out tasks that are typically easy for humans, but are difficult for computers.

When you think of AI, you may be conjuring images of autonomous robots taking over the world.

Fortunately, there’s a long way to go before that happens. But AI already plays a big part in our lives, whether we realize it or not. Have you ever browsed recommendations on Netflix? Or checked your Facebook newsfeed? These types of personalized experiences are just a few examples of AI-powered technology.

With the staggering amount of online data being collected, many companies are already leveraging artificial intelligence to understand customer behaviour and preferences.

2. Digital Centralisation

Over the past decade, we’ve seen many different types of devices, including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and dozens of other “smart” appliances. We’ve also come to rely on lots of individual apps in our daily lives, including those for navigation to even changing the temperature of our house.

Consumers are craving centralisation; a convenient way to manage everything from as few devices and apps as possible. Smart speakers like Amazon’s Alexa or Google Chromecast are a good step in the right direction, but 2018 may influence the rise of something even better.

3. 5G

Rumour has it that we could have a 5G network in place—with 5G phones—by the end of 2019. 5G internet has the potential to be almost 10 times faster than 4G, making it even better than most home internet services.

This will revolutionise how consumers use the internet. We are already seeing a huge surge of people purchasing products via their mobiles and tablet devices and with the introduction of 5G you can expect this continue to grow at a rapid rate. In the PWC Total Retail Report 2017 30% of people surveyed said that their mobile phone will become their main shopping tool of the future.

4. Voice Search.

A few years ago, voice search was decent, but unreliable. Today, voice search might as well be flawless; Microsoft’s latest test gives its voice recognition software a 5.1 percent error rate, making it better at recognising speech than human transcribers. Similarly, robotic speech and chatbots are growing more sophisticated.

In 2018, with these improvement cycles continuing, we’ll be able to communicate with our devices, both ways, without any major hiccups or mistakes. We can also expect these kinds of developments on websites, Social media platforms eliminating or at least reducing the requirement for care lines and even in store, replacing potentially the requirement for human interaction.
