Aishling Barry, Dental Expert for our GSK account, shares with us what #EachforEqual means to her and some great tips for women looking to progress their career.
Tell us about your role within CPM and how long you have been working with the company?
I am a Dental Expert for the GSK account and I have worked for CPM since May 2018. The main aspects of my role are to educate on the science and promote Oral care products to dental healthcare professionals. Another important aspect of my role is to support the pharmacy and grocery teams on site and in-store with new product launches.
What does 2020 International Woman’s Day slogan, #EachforEqaul mean for you in your work life?
For me, the 2020 IWD slogan “Each for Equal” speaks volumes to the importance of having each individual strive for equality within the workplace and outside the workplace regardless of their gender, it should be based on the strengths and skills of each individual and what they can bring to their role in the company and to their teams. I believe if we can focus on encouraging this it would help to continue to build a more equally balanced society where focus is on merit rather than gender.
What challenges have you faced, as a woman, in becoming successful in your field? How did you overcome them?
Personally, I feel fortunate to have had a very positive experience in the workplace. I do believe that a lot of this can be attributed to the professional women who have paved the way for a more balanced workplace environment but also I believe that a good working ethos and discipline in my job has also helped to create this positive experience. I also hope to instil the same ethos and learning experiences for those who are new to the industry. It is important to learn from the past and keep looking to the future.
What advice would you give to young women who are trying to build a career in your field?
- Embrace change
- Be adaptable to a constantly fast paced and changing work environment
- Always remain curious and learn about new developments in science and technology that will have a direct influence on new products.
- Be enthusiastic about both people and product because you can’t have one without the other, both are an integral part of the complete sales and education process.
How can individuals help forge a gender equal world?
I believe if we are all open to the fact that everyone has their own story, their own challenges and their own sets of strengths and weaknesses, regardless of gender, we can very much forge ahead with a gender equal world.
Wham woman inspires you?
At the moment, I have been admiring the strength and tenacity of Senator Elizabeth Warren in the current presidential candidate debates and rallies. Her uncanny ability to communicate important topics in a male dominated environment in a calm and collected but assertive manner has been inspiring. Closer to home I cannot finish without mentioning our own CEO, Lorraine Butler, who encourages growth within the company whilst eliminating any gender pay gaps, her work ethos literally embodies the “Each for Equal” 2020 slogan.
